What is a Book Coach?

A book coach is a professional mentor. Writing is hard, and it helps to have someone in your corner, showing you the ropes and rooting for you to succeed. A good book coach will guide you through the pitfalls, help you over the hurdles, and cheer for you as you reach the finish line.

Okay, let’s set the sports metaphors aside. A book coach provides an initial assessment of your idea/existing manuscript, asking questions such as: Does it have commercial appeal? Who is it for? How long will it take to complete? During the writing process, your coach will offer guidance, help you hone your skills, and be there to support you when you struggle to find the right words or develop that pivotal plot point. When your book nears completion, your coach may discuss publishing options with you or help you write a query letter. Most importantly, your coach will offer encouragement and feedback throughout your journey.

Do I need a book coach?

No! But it’s nice to have one. It can make the difference between thinking about writing a book, and actually writing one. Having someone to be accountable to, someone cheering for you, makes the process much easier.

What’s the difference between a coach and an editor?

A book coach will guide you through the writing process and provide moral support. An editor will assist you with the actual words and story -- cleaning and polishing your drafts until your sentences shine like diamonds. Editors give you the feedback needed to take average writing to exceptional prose. Not everyone needs a coach. But every book needs an editor.
